UK Budget 2025: Key Information for EV Drivers

The Future of EV Charging

Last week, Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves MP announced that EV drivers can expect to see a pay-per-mile tax on electric vehicles (EVs) implemented in 2028. As an EV charging hub provider, Greenwheel Electric acknowledges both the challenges and opportunities in this announcement. Overall, the recent budget statement prominently highlighted the future of EVs, signalling the UK Government’s strong commitment to fostering sustainable transport.

The overall costs of running an EV continue to be very competitive in the current market, which we expect will only continue to improve as technology rolls out more widely. Whilst we must acknowledge that the introduction of a pay-per-mile tax has the potential to drive concern in those hoping to swap to EV, we remain confident that the EV market is the future. Current EV drivers can expect to pay an extra £255 +/- per year, which, although it may sound excessive, has the potential to remain a cost-affordable option in comparison to the costs of running a petrol or diesel vehicle.

The UK government’s commitment of £1.3 billion into the Electric Car Grant reflects a strong desire to support the EV transition. This makes the decision to choose an EV increasingly favourable compared to traditional diesel and petrol vehicles. It not only encourages greener options but also enhances the overall appeal of switching to electric, which we believe will help extend EV purchasing across both business and private markets.

As we look ahead to the introduction of a mileage charge in 2028, there will be an essential shift towards maximising value in EV motoring. In light of this, offering competitively priced EV charging is central to our mission at Greenwheel Electric. We remain steadfast in our commitment to providing cost-effective charging solutions that benefit all consumers.

At Greenwheel Electric, we welcome the UK Government’s financial commitment to greener solutions. Our strategic partnerships with organisations such as the Strathleven Foundation highlight our commitment to delivering accessible, ultra-rapid charging and delivering a unique proposition to local communities and businesses alike.

Greenwheel Electric look forward to engaging with the Scottish Government to ensure more support is made readily available for EV car companies to bring down the purchase prices across the board, and support infrastructure.
